TRADITION was formed in Brent, North West London, in 1976, initially as; “Special Brew”. The original line-up comprised; Chris “Buff Head” Henry (Bass Guitar), Paul “Echo” Thompson (Keyboard & Vocals), Tony “Drummie” Matthews (Drums), Les “Trooper” McNeil (Guitars & Vocals) and Paul Dawkins (Vocals).
In 1976, the band signed to Venture Records and released early singles including; “Movin’ On”, “Rastafari”, “Summertime”, etc.
As popular as Tradition are in Britain, it is arguable that they are more popular abroad than they are in the UK; they are known all over the world. Though they are always in demand for live shows in Britain, they are also in demand in the rest of the world and have toured extensively, bringing “Lovers Rock” to every continent. They have also played numerous festivals and charity events, including; the Anti-Nazi League’s “Rock Against Racism” Tour.
Besides their awesome vocals, the band-members are accomplished musicians, composers, writers and producers, sought after by their peers for studio recordings. For example, they were utilized as a studio band, by producer Barry Tyrone. The band built their reputation through live performances, backing singers such as; Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson, Honey Boy, Culture and many more.
In 1978, they won the “Echoes Best Single” Award, for “Breezin’” and signed a deal with RCA Records. In 1978 they released a 12” Disco-Mix single; “Why, Why”, on RCA.
In 1979 Paul Dawkins left to pursue a solo career and was not replaced.
In 1982, the band released its swansong album; “Spirit of Ecstasy”, featuring Paul Thompson’s keyboard playing. Les McNeil also pursued a solo career but the band never broke up and as a matter of fact still performs at every show as the full band of original members.
In 2015 Tradition received a BEFFTA award for “Excellency & Achievement”, one of many they have amassed over the past 40 years.
They have never stopped writing and recording and have recently signed to BASS1 Entertainment, stepping up the anti with another awesome production, the beautiful Lovers Rock single; “DREAMERS”, which is now on sale in 243 countries and also available for download purchase, from all major music-download sites, including; Amazon, iTunes, etc.
